Aretha Franklin (1942-today) is the "Queen of Soul." She is one of the giants of soul music. "More than any other performer, she epitomized soul at its most gospel-charged." She touched and inspired millions through her music. She is one of the most honored female singers of the last 50 years. She grew up with the great Civil Rights leaders. She wrote "Respect" which gave the Civil Rights an anthem. Her music is timeless. She has been a central figure in American Culture for five decades. She is a "sound of America."
Her talent is still being recognized today:
Rolling Stone Magazine ranked her as one of its "100 Greatest Singers of All Time" list as well as the ninth greatest artist of all time. She won 20 career Grammy Awards. She sold more than 75 million records worldwide. In 1987, Franklin became the first artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2012, she was inducted into the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
